A Quick Info
What is Cornstarch?
Cornstarch is corn starch (also called corn flour or cornstarch in English). Although the name is often considered a trademark (Maizena is a popular brand name), this term in Indonesia is often used generally to refer to this type of flour.
Characteristics of Cornstarch:
Pure white in color
The texture is very fine like powder
Does not contain gluten (so it is safe for a gluten-free diet)
Functions of Cornstarch in Cooking:
Thickens soups, sauces, and cooking sauces.
Makes the texture of cakes softer, for example in cookies.
Makes fried foods crispier when mixed into flour dough.
Sometimes it is also used as a homemade cosmetic ingredient (for example a natural face mask).
If you see a cake or cooking recipe that requires cornstarch, it is usually to produce a soft, smooth texture, or to thicken the sauce.
